USA Today sparked a digital arms race as meme-equipped gun enthusiasts aimed to school the publication for a video it released on AR-15 accessories in its coverage of the Sutherland Springs shooting.
The 90-second animated graphic starts with a Ruger AR556, similar to the weapon believed used by Devin Kelley, the killer who claimed 26 lives Sunday in the small Texas community outside of San Antonio. Then the video starts to leave the rails by showing a number of various accessories available to the AR family such as 100-round drum mags, underbarrel 12 gauge shotgun attachments, a trigger crank and a chainsaw bayonet.
Seriously, it’s a thing. An $800 thing to be exact.
However, it’s not a thing that has been mentioned in the coverage from Sutherland Springs– other by USA Today– who, after taking a beating on social media (#ChainsawBayonet), conceded it was just a possible modification.

Of course this sparked an ongoing retort of other “possible modifications” of “How is this still legal?” flavored attachments on twitter.
