Reporters in Memphis recently got an up close and personal look at the police department’s MRAP vehicle.
While the Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles were originally designed for military use, some law enforcement agencies are finding them helpful tools in protecting and serving the people of their communities.
“If we had an active shooter and we had to go get kids out of school or we had to get individuals or citizens out of school who are coming under fire…If we could get that vehicle in, you could get those people,” explained Col. Samuel Hines with the Memphis Police Department.
Hines said there’s no “offensive mode” with the department’s MRAP.
“We have other equipment we can utilize if we have to go offensive or tact,” Hines said.
In a situation like the sniper ambush on the Dallas police officers, Hines said the vehicle would have been helpful in getting people to safety. In addition, in the midst of large storms or even tornadoes – both of which are common in the South – the vehicle could be used to get to people in a dangerous location and move them to safer location.
