A Winchester 1886 rifle, blurring the line between firearm and art, fetched more than a million dollars at last week’s auction hosted by Illinois-based Rock Island Auction Company. The cool $1,178,750 price tag was the highest at the auction and third highest in the company’s history.
“Besides being a beautiful gun, this is everything you’re looking for in a Winchester 1886. It’s a .50 Express, takedown, with an octagonal barrel,” said Joel Kolander, Interactive Production Manager for RIA.
The rare Winchester rifle was a product of master engraver John Ulrich, from the talented Ulrich family that also bred two other master engravers: Herman and Conrad Ulrich.
The rifle was in near mint condition with gold and platinum inlays in the takedown collar and barrel breech along with a walnut piano finish on the stock. Until auction, it had been kept in the Mac McCroskie Collection.
