In Pennsylvania, more than 200,000 people have a concealed weapons permit and although firearms training is not a requirement in the application process, officials say gun owners continue to seek out training on their own.

One place gun owners are able to receive training is a two-day firearms course offered by the Adams County Sheriff’s Department in Gettysburg, PA.

“I think we have one of the best classes that I know of in this state,” boasted Sheriff James W. Muller. “I am a big believer in the Second Amendment, but there is also a big responsibility in carrying that weapon.”

The instructors aim to guide new gun owners through the many responsibilities that come with carrying a firearm.

“What we teach is self-defense and every aspect of it,” Chief Deputy L.J. Supenski said.

“If you use a firearm today and you take a life, it is not a question if you are going to get sued, you are going to get sued,” Supenski said. “We talk about how to prepare for that and we talk about things like what type of insurance you should have.”
