A 56-year-old man was shot in the hip after he broke into a Pittsburgh home Monday evening and attacked the homeowner with a crowbar.
The resident, who is 51 years old, said he awakened just after 9 p.m. to what sounded like someone breaking into his house. The homeowner grabbed a gun, went to see what the commotion was, and found Darrell Bettis rummaging through his house.
The homeowner warned Bettis, who was armed with a crowbar, to get on the ground and told him the police were on their way. Bettis, however, ignored the homeowner’s commands and instead came at him in a violent manner.
The two engaged in a physical altercation, during which time the homeowner was struck in the head with the crowbar numerous times and Bettis was also shot in the hip.
When officers arrived on the scene, Bettis was transported to the hospital for medical treatment, then released into police custody. He now faces charges for aggravated assault, burglary and criminal mischief.
The homeowner was treated for injuries he sustained during the struggle but is expected to be okay.
