President Obama talks guns in an ad aired by the Giffords group in support of Democrat candidate Ralph Northam in Virginia’s gubernatorial race.
The one-minute ad takes on Republican Ed Gillespie’s endorsement from the National Rifle Association and paints Northam as the candidate for governor who will take on the gun rights group.
“The United States of America is the one advanced nation on Earth in which we do not have sufficient common-sense gun-safety laws, even in the face of repeated mass killings,” says Obama in the ad, which began airing in the Richmond area radio market this week. “It cannot be this easy for somebody who wants to inflict harm on other people to get his or her hands on a gun.”
Gillespie, a onetime counselor to President George W. Bush and Republican party lobbyist, has the NRA’s “A” rating and endorsement along with just over $1 million in campaign assistance.
Northam has the support of the Brady Center, the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, Everytown — which has invested $1.4 million in Virginia races this year — and Giffords.
