An Oakwood, Georgia, middle school teacher was arrested this week during a massive drug bust.
Authorities arrested Karla Alvarez, 28, and Monica Pascual Brito, 24, at their home where officers found 61 kilograms of cocaine and 1 kilogram of heroin, worth an estimated $6.2 million. Authorities also found two semi-automatic rifles in the home. Both women were charged with trafficking and possession with the intent to distribute cocaine and heroin, as well as possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
“The quantity is pretty substantial,” said Lt. Scott Ware, spokesman for the Hall County Sheriff’s Office. “We have arrested teachers before, but I don’t recall arresting a teacher with this amount of drugs.”
Alvarez has been a soccer coach and teacher at Chestatee Middle School Academy since 2015. However, Hall County schools spokesman Gordon Higgins said there was no indication Alvarez tried or had any intent to sell drugs to the students at the school.
Nonetheless, Higgins said the discovery was nothing short of shocking.
“She’s been characterized as a very quiet and reserved person,” Higgins said. “She came to us with very good credentials. We always do extensive background checks on all of our employees. There was nothing to indicate that
