Michigan Firearm FAQ: Will Factory Reload Ammo Cause My Handgun To Malfunction?

Q: Hey Rick, I was trying out my Sig 938 I recently bought second hand (pristine condition) at a local gun shop. It jammed every round using their ammo (re-loads). I thought uh oh. but then my buddy’s Glock 26 was jamming on house ammo as well. My question is, have you seen this with house ammo very often?
A: I have seen severe jamming issues with good firearm brands being used with cheap factory reloaded ammo.
To reduce range expenses, I allow my students to shoot factory reloads for class but I do not enthusiastically endorse it. I always suggest spending a few extra dollars for a more enjoyable and less problematic shooting experience with non reloaded factory ammunition.
However, OTOH by the end of the session the student will be a pro at resolving handgun malfunctions. So, a positive can indeed be realized in a non optimal situation.
