Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), a potential candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, said the “first thing” Democrats should try to do if they take control of Congress is to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to Hot Air.

It’s a message that establishment Democrats have largely shied away from, and one that isn’t extremely popular among voters, but Gillibrand has been one of the first and strongest advocates for it.

“So when we flip the House and flip the Senate, I think the first thing we should do is deal with the children who have been separated from their families at the border,” Gillibrand said at OZY Fest. “I think we should get rid of ICE.”

Gillibrand suggested separating out the duties of ICE, and changing how immigration is viewed.

“We should separate out the two missions, the anti-terrorism mission, the national security mission, and then on the other side make sure you’re looking at immigration as a humanitarian issue,” Gillibrand said.

What else does she think Democrats should do?

Shortly after eliminating the agency responsible for border security and numerous other national security functions, Gillibrand believes Democrats should turn their attention to gun control.
