George Zimmerman, the Florida neighborhood watch volunteer attacked by a drug-abusing illegal gun trafficker named Trayvon Martin, is auctioning off the Kel-Tec PF9 9mm pistol that he used the night of February 26, 2012, to shoot Martin and defend his life.

The handgun, returned to Zimmerman after the trial and a failed attempt by the U.S. Justice Department to trump up federal charges, is going up for auction today at 11:00 AM ET on the firearms and accessories auction site Gunbroker in a one-day-only auction, with a starting reserve of $5,000.

Kel-Tec PF9s are compact, polymer-framed 9mm pistols with a double-action-only (DAO) trigger and seven-shot steel factory magazines, typically purchased by people on a tight budget. The MSRP for the model is $356.36, and they’re often sold for around $250.

In the item description, Zimmerman justifies the $5,000 starting bid by pointing out that the handgun’s pivotal role in both saving his life and serving as a key piece of evidence in a very famous and controversial trial.
