California – -(Ammoland.com)- The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has announced that there will be no elk hunts on the grounds of Fort Hunter Liggett (FHL) in southern Monterey County for the 2016-2017 season.

An active military training facility, Fort Hunter Liggett has sponsored tule elk hunts since 1996. However, the facility’s primary mission is to support military training, and due to increased operational requirements, a portion of the grounds must be closed to the public.

The grounds to be closed include a majority of the areas where elk are typically harvested.

“Unfortunately, a viable, quality elk hunt with a reasonable and fair possibility for success will not be possible at Fort Hunter Liggett this year, but there are still good opportunities to harvest deer there,” said CDFW Elk Program Manager Joe Hobbs.

The Fort Hunter Liggett Management Deer Hunts J-10, G-8 and A-33 will be unaffected by the closure.

More information about these hunts, including Hunting Permit Applications for the upcoming season, can be found at http://fhlfmwr.com/hunt.html.
