You’re probably not familiar with Rick “Mr. Monday” Monday’s 19 years in the big leagues, but you have probably heard of the most memorable play of his career in a game against the Dodgers in 1976. While warming up in center field, a man and his son hopped the fence and attempted to burn the American flag in left-center. Mr. Monday ran over, grabbed the flag, and then jogged off the field to roaring cheers. During his next at bat, Monday received a standing ovation and the Dodger’s scoreboard flashed, “RICK MONDAY… YOU MADE A GREAT PLAY…”

When interviewed after the incident, Mr. Monday said, “If you’re going to burn the flag, don’t do it around me. I’ve been to too many veterans’ hospitals and seen too many broken bodies of guys who tried to protect it.”

The world needs more people like Mr. Monday
