Like many famous rounds–such as the .40 S&W, .45 ACP, and 9mm Luger–the .223 Wylde bears the name of its creator/publicist. Bill Wylde wanted to improve the accuracy of the existing 5.56mm/.223 cal. rounds, and developed the round to accommodate higher grain weight projectiles.
