Local media went down the rabbit hole in the Tampa area to see if one agency’s investment in gunfire detection technology was paying off two years later.
As detailed in the above spot from WFLA, over a two-year period, deputies with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office responded to 769 ShotSpotter alerts, finding shell casings 184 times along with 19 victims suffering gunshots. In the end, 10 arrests were made. Now, two years into a three-year deal to monitor 4.5 square miles of the county, the question: is the juice worth the squeeze?
While Hillsborough County Major Frank Losat says the program has saved lives, he also stresses that the county will evaluate the system over the next nine months before making a decision about the ongoing ShotSpotter contract.
