An elegant carry idea from an age where the well-dressed gentleman always carried a cane, two disguised 19th Century guns designed to counter ruffians have endured and are now up for grabs.
While cane guns became popular around the time of the Civil War — and were dominated by Remington’s gutta-percha “Thomas Patent” guns — the two pieces up for sale in Rock Island Auction Company’s June Regional event this week are a Dumonthier “Challenge” cane pistol from Paris and an air-powered cane gun crafted by Reilly of London, complete with pump.
Estimated prices range from $900 to $1,600 and both of the above are set to head to the block on Thursday.
