Baltimore Police Officer, body camera stops bullet, baltimore shootout

Ventura County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ron Helus died responding to an active shooter Wednesday night in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Helus, a 29-year veteran of the department, was reportedly the first one to enter that Borderline Bar and Grill, where the shooting took place.

According to multiple reports, Helus immediately entered the bar upon hearing gunfire from outside. Police said Helus confronted the shooter, “but was shot and severely wounded. Civilians and other deputies pulled Sergeant Helus from the bar.”

Ventura Sheriff Geoff Dean confirmed that Helus died at the hospital.

Ron Helus Hailed as a Hero

Law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every day. Other members of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office said Helus epitomized what it is to be an LEO.

“He’s absolutely a hero. … He epitomized what a cop does — he’s a cop’s cop,” Ventura County Sheriff’s Capt. Garo Kuredjian told CNN. “When he heard the gunfire, he ran in. He ran in and no doubt saved others from being victimized. … And that’s what cops do; that’s what he did.”
