Brady Campaign gently reels back ’40 percent’ claim as they redouble gun control effort (VIDEO)

One of the nation’s most enduring anti-gun groups has announced a new three-point plan, while quietly adjusting a long-touted stale statistic on gun sales.
One of the Brady Campaign’s new co-presidents, Kris Brown, discusses the group’s new legislative strategy in the above video released Friday. The trio of measures the group wants to see turned into new law and policy include the adoption of “red flag” legislation that would enshrine extreme risk protection orders to temporarily seize guns from those thought to be at risk. Another proposal would stop the production of new “assault weapons” while allowing a grandfathering of the millions already in circulation. And of course, the group remains wedded to their bedrock issue: universal background checks for all gun sales.
But Brown does say something that goes against long-established Brady dogma when it comes to the actual number of gun sales that are done in the country without a background check. Over the past several years, the organization has maintained that “40 percent of guns now sold in America are done so without a Brady background check.” The statement is under their current key statistics and has been consistently mentioned in press releases in 2014, 2015, 2016, and in
