Not content with his own story as a wounded survivor of the Virginia Tech massacre on April 16, 2007, Colin Goddard, the Senior Policy Advocate for Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety, is now rewriting history to claim that the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting is what drove him into becoming a gun control activist.

On a cold April morning in 2007, Colin Goddard called 911 for the first time in his life as a lone gunman opened fire on his intermediate French classroom in Virginia Tech. Today, he shared his story with a room of approximately 800 young leaders at the FORBES Under 30 Summit in Boston.

“I’m a firm believer in the idea that we as individuals should not be recognized for the things that happen to us, but the impact of what we do in the future,” said Goddard. “This opened my eyes to a world I knew very little about.”

Goddard was one of the seven in the classroom of 17 to survive that day. He still has three bullets in his hips and knee.
