Carbondale, IL police officer responding to sounds of shots being fired between 11:30 and 11:45 last night encountered a tan four-door sedan leaving the area at a high rate of speed. This began a chase, which resulted in shots fired and an officer being hit.

A Carbondale police officer was last reported in serious condition after being shot late Sunday evening.

The Carbondale Police Department says around 11:38 p.m., officers were on patrol in the 700 block of North Robert A. Stalls Street when they determined gunshots were being fired.

While driving toward the source of the gunshots, they saw a tan four-door car driving away from the scene.

The officers started to pursue the tan car.

During the chase, a suspect fired several gunshots from the tan car.

The shots hit the police car and one of the officers inside.

The officer was taken to a local hospital and then transferred to a St.Louis area hospital.

He was last listed in serious condition.

The tan car got away from the scene and the suspects have not been located.
