We have heard the vice president years ago speak of firing in the air to ward off would-be home invaders. It would appear that with every 1 piece of good advice comes a trail of 9 pieces of bad advice along with it. Ideas of what to do and what not to do can usually come with common sense (which is in short supply these days). So we look to Ken Hanson’s book The Ohio Guide to Firearm Laws, as a good rule of thumb to follow even for gun owners outside of Ohio.

In the fourth edition on pages 76-77 you will see this advice:

Prosecutors have another term for warning shots: attempted felonious assault, improper discharge of a firearm etc. Shooting someone in the leg rather than center mass is similarly misguided and will not evade serious felony charges. Similarly, pulling out a gun just to “defuse the situation” is a legal non-starter. Do not be tempted to do this.
