Shooters need to understand that the grip they use for handling semi­auto handguns is very different than gripping a revolver. When gripping a semi­auto handgun, it is common for both the strong side and support thumb to stretch out along the frame to fully support the gun. Many people have held a revolver using the same hand position and have been injured due to gasses and particles being released from the cylinder gap. The cylinder gap is a small area between the front of the frame and the cylinder of the revolver. Upon firing, gasses are expelled from the cylinder gap which could cause the shooter to get burned, cut, or even worse if they position their support thumb over the cylinder gap area.

First, it is important to be aware of the small cylinder gap and the potential damage that it could cause. The shooter will need to rotate their support thumbs downward to avoid that area.
