Two men responsible for shooting a wildlife officer during a violent struggle also tried to repeatedly run him over with his patrol boat, authorities said.

Samuel Wyndham Reager, 18, and Lachlan Fain Akins, 20, have been arrested following the open-water gun fight that took place on Friday afternoon in Florida.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Officer David Brady had approached a sailboat in St Andrew Bay after calls about a disturbance, the Bay County Sheriff’s Office reported in a news release.

When Brady asked to see identification, one of the two men on board, Reager, went into the cabin, returned with a handgun and began firing at Brady, WJHG reported.

The officer jumped into the water and began firing back, hitting Reager in the hand, authorities said.

Reager and Akins boarded the officer’s patrol boat and tried to run him over several times, according to a news release.

Brady was hit twice during the exchange and was taken to hospital where he was released with non-life threatening injuries, according to WJHG.

‘It is a miracle he was not killed,’ said Sheriff Frank McKeithen, according to the Panama City News Herald.

‘But because of his experience, training and bulletproof vest, he was able to survive.’
