The Transportation Security Administration said Tuesday a new yearly record for the number of firearms discovered in carry-on bags has been set.
The TSA Blog reported that, for 2017, a record 3,957 guns were discovered in carry-on luggage in airports throughout the country. Of those firearms, 3,324, or about 84 percent, were loaded and 1,378 had a round chambered. The figure surpassed the 3,391-gun benchmark set in 2016.
The top airports for firearms discovered were Atlanta with 222, Dallas/Fort Worth (211), Houston (142) and Denver (118).
Among those found with guns last year was a Southwest Airlines pilot reportedly arrested in St. Louis, country singer Scotty McCreery who said he forgot he had his pistol in his backpack, and rocker Rick Derringer who had to leave his Kel-Tec .380 behind in Atlanta.
In other guns-at-the-airport news from 2017, a baggage handler in Texas picked up 18 months for stealing guns from checked luggage while a federal air marshal on a flight from England to New York left her service weapon in the plane’s bathroom where a passenger found it.
