With it’s classic metal action, retro fold-out stock and compact barrel, the Sturm Ruger AC-556 is a sexy little machine gun.
Over the years, John ‘Zippy’ Turner has owned two of them. Unlike Ruger’s semi-automatic Mini-14 rifles, AC-556’s have single shot, three-round-burst and full auto capabilities.
Ruger made AC-556’s for the police and prison guards in the mid 1970’s. As years went by, they were traded in for newer guns, and since they were transferable, dealers could sell them to the public. Unfortunately, Ruger no longer services AC-556’s. So, if you have one and need parts, you have to find a post sample that’s been cut-up.
Zippy got into machine guns because he met a bunch of good ol’ boys from Vermont called the Green Mountain Boys. Every July they have machine guns shoots in Eden, Vermont, and he got into it. He admits that his machine guns don’t go out much. They get shot maybe twice a year, and owning them is more of an investment than anything. Prices keep going  up, and in the meantime, you can shoot them.
Zippy thinks it’s pretty neat that if you want to own a machine gun, you can submit some paperwork and a few month
