By gunwriter The scout rifle concept continues to gain traction. Cooper once postulated that the scout rifle was possibly ahead of its time. Judging by recent interest, maybe he was right. This year we have already seen two new scout rifle introductions from Mossberg and Savage and Ruger continues to add to their line of Gunsite Scout Rifles. Admittedly, the scout rifle did not initially inspire me. I based this lack of inspiration on my experiences with other rifles and a few brief encounters with scouts. However, the more I read of what Cooper had written, the more I realized that on many things he was right. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t agree with everything Cooper said. I think the 9mm is just fine, especially with modern hollow point ammo, I like the .223 Remington even for hunting deer, and I do not believe added killing power is found with more bullet weight. But, I figured it was at least my journalistic duty to give the scout rifle an honest try.
