The ninth annual Michigan State subgun competition on Aug. 11 in Mount Pleasant, Michigan saw a solid turnout of subgun shooters from across the northeast.
Submachine gun shooting competitions are one of the least known shooting disciplines in the U.S. because of federal and state restrictions placed on machine guns. Still, the Michigan subgun competition shoot is highly regarded within the subgun community — of which there are few — so shooters travel long distances to attend the events.
Since the sport is not officially recognized like USPSA or 3-gun competitions, it’s organized by the die-hard group of subgunners who find the range, set up the targets and charge a small fee to cover costs.
The subgun community is small and tightly knit. Many the shooters have known each other for many years. Besides good friendly competition, there’s also a great deal of socializing, laughing and checking out new gear.
Scores are tallied up at the end of the day and results announced. This year’s shoot saw a number of new shooters as well as the highest turnout of female shooters in it’s history.
Regardless of who wins or loses, a good time is always
