What was supposed to be a joke on social media Wednesday night landed a middle school student from Center Line, Michigan, facing criminal charges.
“It breaks my heart because it will impact this child for a long time,” said Center Line Public School superintendent Eve Kaltz.
The student apparently made a Snapchat post with a photo of a gun and the caption, “Don’t come to school tomorrow.”
Eight minutes later, Kaltz received a flood of concerning text messages, emails, and instant messages from students and parents alike.
“The child said it was a joke. But again, we take it very seriously,” Kaltz said.
An investigation was launched, and the student was arrested, but the weapon in the photo turned out to be a paintball gun. The teen is currently being held at the juvenile detention center without bond, with a hearing scheduled for November.
