A member of the military from Fort Pickett got his hands on a National Guard M577 command post carrier and wound up in a low-speed pursuit with the Virginia State Police.
The incident started about 7:50 p.m. Tuesday night when the M113 armored vehicle variant was driven off base on to Route 460 then Intestate 95, as reported by the Virginia Pilot. Police followed the vehicle over a 60 mile route at speeds up to 40 m.p.h , which is about the top-out for the vehicle.
There were no reported injuries or crashes involving the wayard tracked vehicle and the unidentified driver is reported to be in custody.
