Unless something really weird happens, Maine will soon become the seventh state to allow concealed carry without a permit. Predictably, there has been much yowling and screeching by the gun haters, who assume that Bangor will become Dodge City, circa 1870, and Augusta will morph into Chicago (which has extremely tough gun laws and a murder rate that’s over the moon) overnight. Right now, Maine is the second-safest state in the Union, just behind Vermont, which also has a no-concealed-permit law, proving that sap-tappers and failed stockbrokers are not particularly dangerous.

The most sensible piece on the issue ran in The Portland Press Herald, which said, in effect, that no permits will make no difference either way. Bad guys will continue to carry guns in defiance of the law, and good guys won’t want spend $900 on a handgun and then carry the thing all the time. (Plus, you can get a serious snowblower for that kind of money, and in Maine, if you have to choose, you get the snowblower.)
