Investigators say the concealed carry permit holder who opened fire on a robbery suspect Saturday night at a gas station in Highland Park, Michigan, acted in self defense, according to local reports.
Police say the CPL-holder and another man were sitting in a vehicle in the parking lot of the Sunoco around midnight when a second vehicle occupied by a single person pulled up beside them. As the three talked, two masked men ran through a field toward the parking lot and fired at the two vehicles.
The CPL-holder drew his weapon and returned fire, striking one of the suspects, who died as a result of his injuries. The second suspect fled from the scene and remains at large.
A neighborhood who witnessed part of the shooting told reporters he saw a vehicle drop off the suspects, then turn around and pick them up again after the shooting. Images of the vehicle appear to have been captured by surveillance video in the area.
Highland Park police think had the CPL-holder not acted, all three men likely would have been killed.
