The attempted late night armed robbery of a Pennsylvania pizza delivery driver ended with the worker in a Pittsburgh hospital and his assailant dead.
Beaver Falls Police Chief John A. DeLuca told local media the driver was coming back to his car around 12:20 a.m. Friday after a delivery at a nearby apartment when he was confronted by a man with a knife. In the ensuing struggle, the unidentified driver was stabbed but was able to defend himself with a gun retrieved from the glove compartment of his vehicle.
The would-be robber, mortally wounded by a single gunshot, staggered a block away and died on the steps of a home.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that residents saw the deliveryman with a “gash on his head and blood dripping from the back of his shoulder where he had been stabbed.” Transported to an area hospital by ambulance, his condition was not released.
Police say the residents who ordered the pizza were not connected to the robbery.
