On Sunday, Ohio Republican Rep. Steve Stivers received a threatening voicemail on his Hilliard district office’s answering machine. The voicemail references the June 14th shooting which left Majority Whip Scalise wounded.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Washington, D.C., 68-year-old E. Stanley Hoff left this voicemail:
I’ve seen the prayer ya’ll were saying at the baseball diamond … I think ya’ll better hit your knees and pray for the people that you’re screwin’ up their lives. We’re coming to get every goddamn one of you and your families. Maybe the next one taken down will be your daughter. Huh? Or your wife. Or even you.
On Wednesday, Hoff was charged with threatening to assault, kidnap or murder a United States official. If convicted, he could face a 10-year prison sentence.
The complaint also states Hoff has left five different threatening voicemails at this district office since February. Capitol Hill Police contacted Hoff and asked him to stop making the threats but he persisted.
“We had to take it [the latest message] seriously, especially when he mentioned the baseball game,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Kelley told The Columbus Dispatch.
