An Evansville, Ohio, police officer is lucky to be alive after the suspect he was chasing turned to fire a gun at the officer—whose own weapon was still holstered during the chase—but couldn’t figure out the safety on the pistol.

The criminal, Cornelius Ratliff, was the front-seat passenger during a routine traffic stop by Evansville police. Officers asked Ratliff to step out of the car for a pat-down, and Ratliff took off running through a residential neighborhood.
