An Atlanta police officer is under investigation after a Fulton County detention officer discovered knives and a loaded gun on an inmate who the Atlanta officer brought to jail this week.
James Blake was jailed after he was arrested on burglary charges following a brief foot pursuit. But in the jail intake, detention officer Darren Green said he found what appeared to be two homemade knives, a razor and a handgun, fully loaded with a round in the chamber. Blake also had a copy of a weapons carry license.
“I was concerned about the safety of the officer who brought him in,” Green said.
Reporters asked Blake if he brought the gun into the jail, but he responded by saying he would rather not say. Blake did, however, say that he would not have harmed anyone.
Nonetheless, Atlanta police Maj. Scott Kreher said the officer was immediately called back to the jail after the discovery and an investigation has been launched to see where the breakdown in security occurred.
“Intake is where everything starts at the Fulton County Jail, and if this area is compromised, the whole jail is compromised,” said jail Maj. Kenneth Walker.
