DETROIT, MI — A man was shot and hospitalized by an off-duty cop who was at a home nearby when he discovered a domestic violence incident unfolding right nearby, the Detroit Free Press reports.

The officer found the man holding a gun to his girlfriend’s head, but that didn’t last long.

According to the Detroit Free Press:

A 45-year-old Detroit man, who was shot by an off-duty police officer as he pointed a gun at his girlfriend, is facing felony charges in the incident. Issac “Ikey” Alexander is charged with felonious assault, resisting and obstructing the police, felon in possession of a firearm, domestic violence and four counts of felony firearm.

The incident happened shortly after 7 p.m. on Oct. 10 in the 5700 block of Rohns. According to authorities, an off-duty police officer saw Alexander choke and slam a woman into the ground and place a handgun to her head. The officer identified himself, displayed his badge, and he instructed Alexander to put the weapon down, prosecutors said. Alexander allegedly failed to drop the weapon and the officer fired, striking him in the groin, according to authorities.
