Shooting at the gun range.
The gun industry’s leading trade association declared August the first ever “National Shooting Sports month.”
The National Shooting Sports Foundation made the announcement Thursday in hopes of attracting new interest to target shooting, “one of America’s greatest pastimes.”
“With so much going on in people’s lives today, the shooting sports offer an opportunity to tune out distractions, learn a new skill, socialize and share their experiences,” said NSSF President and CEO Steve Sanetti in a press release Thursday. “It’s important to remember to pass on our traditions and to reflect on our unique freedoms that make participating in them possible.”
NSSF created a companion website, shootingsportmonth.com, complete with a searchable list of ranges in your state, local retailer promotions and training courses.
Zach Snow, NSSF’s director of shooting range services, said it “would be a fun month” and encouraged target shooters to share photos on Instagram and Twitter while at the range with the hashtag #LetsGoShooting.
“Let’s make this one to remember,” he said.
About 50 million Americans participate in target shooting sports, according to the NSSF.
