It’s been a long time since I’ve heard a child utter the phrase “It’s a free country!” I’d like to believe it’s because I don’t really spend any time with children, but I’m starting to believe that it’s something far more sinister: Even children aren’t naïve enough to believe that America is a free country (at least not in New Jersey).

So I started looking to evidence that this, in fact, isn’t a free country, and what I found is frightening. Most of them are obvious (e.g., militarized police force, police brutality, killing of US citizens by drone without due process, operation Prizm, etc.) so I decided to focus on things that everyone seems to accept, or at least overlook: Freedoms that have been stripped without protest.

The 2nd Amendment is supposed to protect the right of the people to keep and bear arms. Yet, for the vast majority of arms that our government has infringed upon our right to keep and bear, there is no debate, there is no outcry, and there is virtually no complaint.
