During a segment Monday covering the third anniversary of the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell used the remembrance to announce that gun control must become a “national conversation” and to laud Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s successful push for “tough gun legislation”

Mitchell went on to say that it is “not an easy task” to pass “tough gun legislation” and that gun control cannot be accomplished “state by state.” “It has to be a national conversation,” Mitchell declared, “because those guns just come in, in people’s trunks from the South and they are actually more valuable because they get sold on the black market in New York City.”

“Right, one state’s law doesn’t stop the next state – someone in the next state from having a gun,” MSNBC anchor Kate Snow added during the conversation.

You can watch the exchange below:

Earlier in the segment, Snow had interviewed Mark Barden and Nicole Hockley, each of whom lost a child during the Newtown attack.

“Heartbreaking to see these parents again,” Mitchell said. “We’ve watched them in the Rose Garden, we’ve watched them on each anniversary, and nothing changes.”
