Mental illness and the role that it plays in violent crime in America has been a topic of debate and misinformation for many years. Whenever there is a mass shooting or violent crime that receives national attention, mental illness is always the first issue discussed, followed closely by a debate on why and how a mentally ill person had access to a gun.
