The decision by the US military in 1984 to adopt the Beretta 92F as its new M9 pistol was controversial, to say the least. It has been (and will always remain, no doubt) a topic of heated gun store debates. Officially, the final decision was made based on per-unit cost but I’ve heard all kinds of conspiracy theories to explain the choice as well. Exactly why the Beretta was selected may never be known but one fact is incontrovertible; the Beretta 92F performed at least as well in the military trials as any of the ten other pistols submitted by seven different manufacturers and better than most.

Machined almost entirely from steel and aluminum forgings, Beretta 92 series pistols remain in widespread front line service despite the ever-growing popularity of more modern, mostly polymer-framed designs. Thanks to some clever improvements made by Beretta engineers, the current 92FS/M9 performs even better than it did in 1984 and still stands out as one of the most reliable auto-loading service pistols ever made.
