TOLEDO, OH — Ohio resident Shawn Northrup and his wife, daughter, grandson, and dog were on a relaxing evening walk while he was legally openly carrying a handgun on his hip next to his cell phone. Northrup has no criminal history and is a simple man who enjoys his family, shooting, and other joys of life. Nothing about this walk was out of the ordinary or illegal.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to keep Northrup from being disarmed, handcuffed, and threatened by a police officer in front of his family.

A stranger on a motorcycle by the name of Alan Rose eyed the gun on Northrup’s hip and stopped. “You can’t walk around with a gun like that!” he scolded. Northrup’s wife, Denise, informed the stranger, “Open carry is legal in Ohio.” Without any conflict, the family continued on their walk and parted ways with Alan Rose.

But the startled motorcyclist was not satisfied. He called 911 informing them that “a guy walking down the street” was “carrying a gun out in the open.” He continued, “He’s telling me it’s legal to carry out in the open.”
