Alejandro Melendez had the shock of his life when he returned to his house to find an intruder in the act of robbing him.

The intruder, later identified as Glenn Smith Jr. of Elyria, assaulted Melendez almost as soon as he made it to the front door. The assault was seen by neighbors since it happened in broad daylight.

The scuffle started in the front yard but continued into the house. Once Melendez made it inside he was able to reach his 9 mm semi-automatic that he kept hidden by the front door. He shot Smith several times in what he states as self-defense.

Smith was taken to Mercy Hospital with multiple bullet wounds where he shortly thereafter died.

One of the neighbors was in her house when she saw the beginning of the assault. Melendez was shoved out of the front door before a short struggle. Then both men ran back inside the house although she did not here to gun shots that followed.

Within a few minutes she saw Melendez burst from the front door with a phone and he made what appeared to be a frantic phone call.
