indianapolis ordinance requires stolem guns are reported within 48 hours

Let’s say you are a resident of Indianapolis. You decide to go on vacation with your family for a while, and when you come back home you find that your home was broken into and several guns have been stolen. Well if that robbery occurred more than 48 hours before you arrived back at home, you could end up on the wrong side of the law. Even though it was the real criminal that broke the law in the first place.

The Indianapolis City County Council just passed an ordinance that would make it mandatory to report any stolen guns within 48 hours.

This controversial ordinance passed by only the slimmest of margins and Republican Mayor Greg Ballard is threatening to use his veto power.

The vote was mainly along party lines with a vote of 15 to 14.

It’s controversial because state law prohibits local governments from controlling gun laws. Some attorneys have said they think the Indianapolis ordinance will likely be challenged by the state.
