Described as “exhibition quality,” a National Match Springfield .30-06 rifle from a renowned firearms collection is up for grabs.
Up for bid in Rock Island Auction Company’s upcoming Dec. 1 sale, this former military Model 1903 has a 1920s-vintage National Match barrel and bolt, though its original serial number was removed as part of the embellishment process applied by Griffin & Howe. From hand-stippling on receiver ring to rich engraving on the barrel bands, floor plate, trigger guard, and rear sight base, this rifle is a showcase piece before you mention the jeweling on the bolt and hand-checkered English walnut stock. Even the companion 1911-dated M1905 bayonet has gotten attention.
The Springfield came from the collection of New York firearms collector Arthur D. Leidesdorf, who at one time ran one of the largest accounting firms in the nation. However, don’t make the mistake of thinking Leidesdorf was just a bookish gun enthusiast. The NYU graduate was an officer in the Army during WWII, where he no doubt came in contact with a 1903 or two.
