When turkey hunting with a bow, you have pins set at the distances that you know you’ll be able to accurately and humanely take a turkey. The distance of your bottom pin is (usually) the maximum range you’ll take a shot. Pretty cut an dry right?

Knowing the maximum distance for hunting with a shotgun tends to be a little less clear. With advances in shotguns, ammunition, and chokes, the maximum distance at which a shotgun can harvest game ethically can differ based on your equipment. This is why patterning is so important. Before hitting the woods make sure you know how many pellets you can put on a paper plate at 10, 20, or 30+ yards. The time to guess isn’t when you have a hot gobbler stalling at 60 yards.
