Smokeless powder is fuel for your ammo. Without it, you have nothing but a short-spark of a primer and a self-defense tool that offers minimal range that really wouldn’t be practical. But despite its importance, most shooters know very little about how smokeless powder works, the different types of gunpowder available to shooters today and how you can maximize your ammunition’s performance with the right powder.

Powder Shapes and Metering

There are four primary shapes you find in smokeless powder: ball, flattened ball, flake and stick. The four varieties all offer different benefits that might be applicable based on the type of shooting you plan to do.
When reloading, you’ll hear the term “powder metering” used a lot. This ties in well with the shape of the powder you’re using. Metering is simply how consistently a powder measures. If a powder is said to “meter well”, that means it can be measured with great precision.

Ball powder
Ball powder looks just like the name suggests. It’s made of tiny spheres that are “ball” shaped. This shape of smokeless powder is pretty cheap for manufacturers to make quickly, which means it generally costs less for shooters.
