FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. —Today, Gun Owners of America (GOA) Senior Vice President, Erich Pratt, issued the following statement in reaction to alarming reports about the failed police response to the Uvalde, Texas shooting:

“Gun Owners of America is saddened to learn of the utter failure of police to adequately confront and engage the mass murderer in a timely fashion.

“This is just another frustrating instance where the police response led to increased carnage inflicted upon innocent people—similar to the tragedies at Columbine, Pulse, and Parkland.

“Gun owners know well that the police have no legal duty to protect individual lives according to decisions like Warren v. District of Columbia. When seconds count, the police are only minutes away, or in the case of the above mass murders, sometimes even far longer. That’s why individual gun owners are their own best defense against an assailant. As we tell people all the time: ‘You are your best first responder.’

“We urge the repeal of the Gun Free School Zones Act to allow our teachers and school staff to arm themselves and serve as a final, critical layer of protection for our students — which is a policy supported by 81% of police.”
