A former player for the National Basketball Association was sentenced to 8 years in prison Thursday for possessing guns stolen from a Chicago rail yard.
According to a Justice Department news release, 30-year-old Nathan Driggers, a former player for the Boston Celtics, possessed 30 guns stolen from a Chicago rail yard and was also previously convicted of a felony. In April, Driggers was found guilty of one count of illegal possession of a firearm by a felon.
All 30 of the guns Driggers possessed were stolen from a Chicago rail yard in 2015, a heist in which thieves nabbed a total of 111 firearms from a cargo train that was parked overnight on its way from a New Hampshire Ruger factory to Spokane, Washington.
Co-defendant Warren Gates was sentenced in January to five years in prison for his involvement in the heist. Gates illegally possessed 24 guns, 17 of which had been stolen from the cargo train.
So far, law enforcement officials have recovered only 19 of the 111 stolen firearms.
