JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA — A home alarm alerted a homeowner that people were there who weren’t supposed to be. It is unclear whether the homeowner was at home at the time of the break-in, but we do know that he defended his home and his property.

Police say the man found two intruders inside the home. One of those intruders was shot by the homeowner and died of his injuries. He was found in a sedan that was parked in the carport.

This incident could have happened one of two ways:

  1. The homeowner was home at the time of the break-in. In this case, it’s usually fair grounds to draw your firearm and defend your property, self and family. Castle doctrine is in place in many states, so be sure to know the laws.
  2. The homeowner was not at home at the time of the break-in. In this case, things get a little weird. If a person goes into a home that is known to have intruders, it could wind up messy.
