Ask The Michigan Firearms Instructor

Q: I use hand cream and try to be careful that it’s rubbed in well so that no finger slips. Just wondered if it has ever come up in training. I know how important it is to get a good grip on things. Do you ever address the issue of using hand cream when handling firearms?

A. I agree that having a good grip on the firearm is important. In all honesty, I can not recall the subject of hand cream usage being discussed. In retrospect, I might start mentioning it.

However, I must say that a frequent issue that arises when training new shooters is perspiration in their hands and within their eventually fogged up shooting glasses. Other user issues with regards to the gripping of the firearm are long fingernails and large rings on their fingers.

Disclaimer: I am not an attorney and my opinion is not legal advice. True story.
